We know how confusing auto insurance can be. We make sure that every customer understands the coverage they are purchasing before we issue the policy.
There are a number of different coverages available... some are required, some are not. Generally:
Every company has their own underwriting rules/guidelines. You should always refer to your company's policy for specific coverage information. Below is a general description of the coverages that most companies offer.
Bodily Injury and Property Damage liability covers your legal liability for damages you cause in a covered motor vehicle accident. If you are sued for a covered accident, the company will also pay for a lawyer to defend you.
You can choose the limits of liablity provided by your policy.
Bodily Injury liability limits divide into a per person and per accident limit. For example, if you have Bodily Injury liability of $100,000/300,000, the company will pay up to $100,000 per person in Bodily Injury liability in a covered accident, and up to $300,000 per accident, total. For Property Damage liability the company pays up to the per accident limit you select.
Uninsured Motorist Coverage (UM) If a driver or owner of a vehicle does not have insurance and is legally liable for an accident, UM coverage is used for injuries (including death) that you, your resident relatives, and/or occupants of your insured vehicle sustain, up to the limits you select. Certain exclusions may apply. Refer to your policy. |
Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UIM) |
If a driver or owner of a vehicle is legally liable for an accident but does not have enough insurance, UIM coverage is used for injuries (including death) that you, your resident relatives, and/or occupants of your insured vehicle sustain, up to the limits you select. Certain exclusions may apply. Refer to your policy. |
MedPay is an optional insurance coverage that pays for reasonable and necessary medical and funeral expenses for covered persons. These expenses must be incurred as a result of an auto accident. |
When your insured vehicle overturns or collides with another object, Collision coverage pays for the damage to your vehilce up to the actual cash value (ACV) of your vehicle at the time of the loss, less your deductible.
If your insured vehicle is damaged due to an event other than collision, Comprehensive coverage will pay for the damage up to the actual cash vehicle (ACV) of the vehicle at the time of the loss, less your deductible. This includes damage from fire, theft, windstorm, flood, and vandalism.
Rental Reimbursement provides rental car coverage when you have a claim that is covered under Comprehensive or Collision coverage. Daily rental amounts are subject to the limit purchased. Rules vary by company.
Towing and Labor coverage provides reimbursement for towing and labor costs necessitated by the disablement of a covered automobile while on the road, provided the labor is performed at the place of disablement.
Roadside Assistance covers the cost of a towing service (to the nearest qualified repair facility) or other service provider if your car breaks down, gets a flat tire, has a dead battery, runs out of gas, or becomes stuck in the mud or snow. This coverage also includes the cost of a locksmith if you're locked out of your car.
